Day 5. Foz do Iguacu

After breakfast, you will visit the Brazilian side of the magnificent Iguaçu Falls following the walkways which border the canyon of the Iguassu River. It is possible to observe hundreds of small waterfalls until ending up in front of the magnificent Devil's Throat, the strongest and mightiest of all falls. The splashes coming from the falling water make you FEEL the falls grandeur and cover the sky with thousands of rainbows.

The Iguacu Falls receive their name from the Caigangues Indian word meaning 'great waters'. The falls are formed by the Iguacu River and consist of 275 separate falls; they are surrounded by the virgin jungle of Iguacu National Park which is home to about 2000 species of flora and 400 bird species (including parrots and toucans). The highest fall, the 'Garganta do Diabo' (Devil's Throat) reaches 70m (230ft), which is one and a half times the height of Niagara Falls.

Discover different types of rare birds in Foz do Iguassu Bird park! You are driven to the entrance of the bird park where you meet your guide. Now you have the opportunity to meet Tucans and Aras during a walk through the amazing ambiance of the bird park. Maybe a cute butterfly catches your eye when making your way.

The big adventure begins at the Macuco Safari entrance gates, located at kilometer 25 of the Cataratas Highway inside the Iguassu National Park, with embarkation in open jeep-towed wagons that permit an unobstructed view of the scenery along the trail. During the stretch of three kilometers through the jungle, multi-lingual guides point out examples of the flora and fauna of the Park. Orchids, palm trees, bromeliads, centenarian trees, as well as wild animals that occasionally cross the trail are pointed out by the guides.

The hike - The second stage, a stretch of 600 meters (optional), is a hike on a trail that leads to a waterfall baptized "Macuco Falls". The waterfall - perfect for a refreshing dip on days of intense heat - spills down from a height of approximately 20 meters. Access is via a stairway carved into the ancient rock. The last stop is the Macuco Safari docks on the Brazilian side of the Iguassu River.

In the water, inflatable bi-motor boats, constructed to withstand the rigors of the excursion, are secure and efficient vessels. Before embarkation, passengers receive life-vests and plastic containers in which to protect photographic and filming equipment.

The boat travels upriver passing the canyon facing the rapids at a speed that permits the appreciation of the scenery, but will also give you the adrenaline and fun. Rocks, animals, and a lot of greenery complete the scenery until the base of the Falls is reached, next to the "great horseshoe" known as the "Devil's Throat". Waterfall shower - Rainbows, blue sky, mist, and water in profusion, punctuate the spectacle that has as its high-point the area of the Falls baptized "The Three Musketeers".

There the captain maneuvers the boat in order to get close enough to provide the passengers with a quick and refreshing shower. Since at the end of the fun everyone normally ends up wet, the passengers more sensitive to cold should not dispense with extra clothes to use after the boat excursion. Another important detail: use comfortable shoes and clothes.

Day 6. Foz do Iguacu

Breakfast at the hotel.

Guide picks you up at the hotel for a full-day adventure in Foz do Iguacu. The Argentinean side is different from the Brazilian; you will walk on paths through the falls which gives you the opportunity to have a look under the falls. You feel the strength of the falling water from up close and enjoy the 55.500 hectares natural park surrounding this spectacular beauty! Within the park, take the train to the marvelous devil's throat the strongest of all the waterfalls. Stand directly above the falling water and admire the strength of this natural phenomenon.

All the facades are made of tiles imported from Portugal, Germany, and France.

São Luís (lit. Saint Louis) is the capital of the Brazilian state of Maranhão. The city is located on São Luís island in the Baía de São Marcos (St Marcus Bay), an extension of the Atlantic Ocean which forms the estuary of Pindaré, Mearim, Itapecuru, and other rivers.

São Luís is the only Brazilian state capital founded by France (see France Équinoxiale) and it is one of the three Brazilian state capitals located on islands (the others are Vitória and Florianópolis). The city has seaports Ponta da Madeira and Porto do Itaqui, through which a substantial part of Brazil's iron ore, originating from the (pre)-Amazon region, is exported. The city's main industries are metallurgical with Alumar and Vale-do Rio Doce. São Luís is home to the Federal University of Maranhão. São Luís was the home town of famous Brazilian Samba singer Alcione, Brazilian writers Aluísio Azevedo, Ferreira Gullar and Josué Montello, Belgian-naturalised soccer player Luís Oliveira, the musician João do Vale and Zeca Baleiro, a Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) singer.

Day 8. Sao Luis do Maranhão - Barreirinhas

After breakfast, we will depart to Barreirinhas and the entire journey is approximately 3.5 hours. Upon arriving, you'll head to the National Park Maranenses with a guide.

Lençois Maranhenses National Park is located in the state of Maranhao (Barrerinhas nearest town) and is considered to be one of the most beautiful places along the Brazilian coastline. It is a sea of sand dunes that covers 70 km of coastline and advances 50 km inland. This formation provides impressive views comprised of countless lakes with blue and green water, which, during the rainy season, contrast with the white sand of the dunes, which can reach 40m in height.

The strong heat is compensated by the refreshing crystal clear ponds and the deserted beaches. The Blue Pond is the most famous and beautiful. There are two oases inside the Park, the Queimada dos Britos and the Baixa Grand. Crabs and sea turtles can be seen along the beaches. The best time of year to visit the region is during the rainy season – from December to July – when the ponds are fuller and not so hot.

Maranenses is an amazing area of 1,000 square meters; combined with white sand dunes up to 40 meters and framing the multicolored freshwater lakes. At first glance, the landscape in the park is like a desert, but in the rainy season, water is collected between the dunes, creating an amazingly beautiful landscape: a combination of blue-green water and white sand.

For its beauty Lençóis Maranenses is also called "The sheets of Maranhão", for its resemblance to white sheets drying in the wind. Ski, stroll or sleigh down the dunes and land up swimming into the crystal clear lagoons or go for a swim in the nearby ocean.

Day 9. Barreirinhas – Sao Luis do Maranhão

Breakfast at the hotel. We will have a tour with English speaking guide on a boat on the river Preguica with short stops to observe the monkeys if we’re lucky. Then we disembark the boat at the place called "little Maranhão". Here we climb small dunes that are even more beautiful than the big ones we saw yesterday.
